Tim Scott, R-S.C., stand on stage before a Republican presidential primary debate on Nov. 8, 2023, in Miami.<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><span class=\"line\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"Figure-credit\">\n<p>Rebecca Blackwell, Associated Press<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>In the hours after the Colorado Supreme Court ruled that former President Donald Trump will not appear on the state\u2019s Republican primary ballot, each of his challengers spoke out against the court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The court <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/12\/19\/24008751\/trump-disqualified-colorado-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">determined<\/a> Trump violated Section 3 of the 14th Amendment,&nbsp;known as the \u201cinsurrection clause,\u201d which bars individuals from holding public office after engaging \u201cin insurrection or rebellion against the Constitution. <\/p>\n<p>The ruling will likely be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"RelatedList Enhancement\" data-module data-align-center>\n<div class=\"RelatedList-title\">Related<\/div>\n<ul class=\"RelatedList-items\">\n<li class=\"RelatedList-items-item\">\n                    <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/12\/19\/24008751\/trump-disqualified-colorado-ballot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump disqualified from 2024 presidential ballots, Colorado Supreme Court rules<\/a>\n                <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump\u2019s remaining challengers for the Republican Party\u2019s presidential nomination all spoke out against the decision Tuesday night. Ron DeSantis called the ruling \u201cunfair\u201d and a \u201cstunt.\u201d Vivek Ramaswamy pledged to remove his own name from Colorado\u2019s ballot in protest. And both Chris Christie and Nikki Haley emphasized that voters, not judges, should determine who the GOP chooses as its nominee.<\/p>\n<p>All the while, Trump maintains a monumental lead in national polls, sitting at around 60% in <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/projects.fivethirtyeight.com\/polls\/president-primary-r\/2024\/national\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FiveThirtyEight\u2019s polling average<\/a>. His closest challengers \u2014 DeSantis and Haley \u2014 are in the low teens.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s competitors have been hesitant to criticize the former president. Each of them \u2014 except Christie \u2014 <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/8\/23\/23840147\/republican-first-2024-debate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pledged<\/a> to support Trump if he is the nominee, even if he is convicted in any of the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/8\/7\/23819407\/donald-trump-criminal-cases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criminal cases<\/a> against him. <\/p>\n<p>But even Christie opposed the court\u2019s ruling, saying the decision is \u201cbad for the country\u201d during a town hall in New Hampshire on Tuesday evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do not believe Donald Trump should be prevented from being president of the United States, by any court,\u201d Christie said, minutes after the ruling was made public. \u201cI think he should be prevented from being the president of the United States by the voters of this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christie emphasized his view that Trump\u2019s actions on January 6 were \u201chorribly wrong,\u201d but that Americans \u201cdeserve to have a trial before rights are taken away from them.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"Enhancement\" data-align-center>\n<div class=\"Enhancement-item\">\n<div class=\"ExternalContent-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"video-container\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Christie: Trump Should Be Prevented From Being President By The Voters\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8eyKnlOmDQ4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Haley gave a similar answer. After a campaign event in Iowa Tuesday, Haley told reporters the decision is \u201cthe last thing we want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to see this in the hands of the voters,\u201d Haley <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/news\/elections\/presidential\/caucus\/2023\/12\/19\/nikki-haley-says-voters-should-decide-on-trump-after-colorado-supreme-court-blocks-him-from-ballot\/71978047007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re going to win this the right way, we\u2019re going to do what we need to do but the last thing we want is judges telling us who can and can\u2019t be on the ballot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis took a more conspiratorial position on the ruling, claiming it was a \u201cstunt\u201d by Democrats to help Trump win the GOP primary. He accused Democrats of \u201cabusing power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat the left and the media and the Democrats are doing \u2014 they\u2019re doing all this stuff, to basically solidify support in the primary for him, get him into the general, and the whole general election is going to be all this legal stuff,\u201d DeSantis <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/4369649-desantis-trump-colorado-ruling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>In a post on <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VivekGRamaswamy\/status\/1737290316527370495\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">X<\/a>, Ramaswamy called the ruling \u201can attack on democracy\u201d and an \u201celection interference tactic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI pledge to *withdraw* from the Colorado GOP primary unless Trump is also allowed to be on the state\u2019s ballot, and I demand that Ron DeSantis, Chris Christie, and Nikki Haley to do the same immediately \u2014 or else they are tacitly endorsing this illegal maneuver which will have disastrous consequences for our country,\u201d Ramaswamy wrote.
